Cosmic Education

My first post on this new blog will be the words of Maria Montessori. The blog is titled “The Great Lessons” in the hope that it will reflect the big picture of

a Montessori school. Montessori’s Great Lessons (the coming of the universe, the coming of life to earth, the creation of humans, the creation of numbers, and the creation of language are the five central Great Lessons) offer the entire universe to the child as an opportunity for exploration and discovery. These lessons form one of the pillars of the foundational philosophy of Montessori elementary education, “Cosmic Education.”

In the words of Maria Montessori:

“…let us give [the child] a vision of the whole universe. The universe is an imposing reality, and an answer to all questions…. All things are part of the universe, and are connected with each other to form one whole unity. The idea helps the mind of the child to become focused, to stop wandering in an aimless quest for knowledge. He is satisfied having found the universal centre of himself with all things”. (Maria Montessori, To Educate the Human Potential).

My hope as I begin this blog is to honor the vision of Maria Montessori and the founding vision of Good Shepherd Montessori School to transform the way children learn and relate to each other, to their school, and to their communities.
